South Mumbai's Reputed International School launches 'Book Buggy - Library on Wheels' to foster Literacy among Underprivileged Children
In a noteworthy initiative, D Y Patil International School, Worli, celebrated the launch of their 'Book Buggy' (Library on Wheels) project, aiming to promote literacy among underprivileged children on the occasion of their Founder & Chairman Dr Ajeenkya D Y Patil, who envisions a world where education becomes the cornerstone of social transformation. The event, held on December 20th 2023, witnessed a blend of academic accomplishments and a commitment to social responsibility.
PTA members and Grade 12 IBDP students were invited to cut the ribbon, officially inaugurating the Book Buggy—a mobile library on wheels designed to overcome barriers to education posed by the high cost of books. This often acts as a significant barrier to quality education for our underprivileged children thus obstructing them from developing a love for reading, acquiring knowledge on diverse subjects, and expanding their horizons. In an effort to support these children, the IBDP students of D Y Patil International School, Worli had launched a book collection drive amongst the school community and also raised funds to buy books by organising various events.
The highlight of the day was the Book Buggy ride, symbolizing the beginning of its journey to spread the joy of reading. Ms. Kinnari Shah (Head of School), the driving force behind the project, shared the vision of bringing quality education to underprivileged children. Ex-Head Boy Dheer Jhaveri and Head Girl Tanushree Taparia conveyed their expectations for future batches, emphasizing the importance of giving back to the community and developing empathy. The event concluded with the Grade 11 IBDP students calling out the community to continue supporting literacy and make a difference.
As the Book Buggy embarks on its journey, it symbolizes not only the gift of knowledge but also the commitment of D Y Patil International School to shaping a brighter future through education and philanthropy.

Schools have reopened: Are You Ready?
Life during the pandemic was difficult for parents and children alike. The return to school is important and hopefully a welcome step. Going back to school will probably look a little different from what parents and children were used to before.
In the current situation, parents are still in the dilemma of whether to send their kids to school or not? The overall number of covid cases is decreasing but children of all age groups are not yet eligible for vaccination which is a major concern for parents.
However, most reputed psychiatrists and psychologists have been emphasising on cognitive, emotional, and social benefits of sending the kids to school. The parents eventually need to prepare their children for the offline world by teaching about self-care and covid hygiene protocols. They should encourage sharing practices and discuss a day at school with a kid and make them feel comfortable. Further, parents should not hesitate to ask for any help from teachers or counsellors.
Similarly, schools must help students with this transition. The first step for schools is to try & arrange the vaccination drive for their students on priority. Recently, D Y Patil International School, Worli has successfully arranged a vaccination drive for its students (age 15 & above) in collaboration with the BMC.
Secondly, schools should focus more on helping students settle down rather than completing portions. Students are eager to resume their learning at school. A grade 5 student, Ms. Tarini Kabra, from D Y Patil International School, Worli said “I was eager to get out of my little burrow and enter my school world. The offline class was a fantabulous experience to finally meet my wondrous peers and mentors”.
Further, the school must train teachers to be sensitive to the emotional and social needs of the learners and that is what D Y Patil International School, Worli is doing since the start of the pandemic by conducting classes with the help of their teachers and mentoring students to deal with anxiety. Incorporating playtime in the initial few days is essential for students' comfort especially for the younger kids as they are going to be away from home after a long time. This will help learners adjust to the offline learning transition. At last, the teachers must reiterate essential agreements in the class considering the covid safety protocols.
It is now time for parents to be optimistic and stay assured that their kids will be happier, freer, and will perform at their optimum in school.
