Our IB Diploma Programme (IBDP1) and IB Career-related Programme (IBCP1) students recently took over the Book Buggy – Library on Wheels project from our seniors, continuing a cherished initiative that fosters a love for reading among younger students. This mobile library makes literature more accessible, engaging, and interactive, bringing books directly to eager young minds.

The first session was a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation as we met our young reading partners for the first time. Interacting with students from Grades 3, 4, and 5, we noticed some initial hesitation on both sides. However, as the stories unfolded, the atmosphere quickly warmed up. The younger students listened with wide-eyed curiosity, eagerly participating by asking thoughtful questions, sharing interpretations, and making personal connections to the stories.

One of the key challenges we faced was the language barrier, as not all students were fluent in English. This required us to adapt our storytelling techniques, using simpler vocabulary, animated expressions, and non-verbal cues to convey meaning. It was a valuable learning experience, testing our ability to communicate effectively, problem- solve, and connect across linguistic differences.

Through Book Buggy, we are actively engaging in CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) and Service Learning, making a direct impact by encouraging literacy and fostering a reading culture within our school community. This initiative aligns with the Service strand, allowing us to contribute meaningfully while developing social and emotional intelligence, patience, and leadership skills.

As we continue this journey, we look forward to strengthening our bonds with our young reading partners and making the Book Buggy project even more impactful. This is just the beginning, and we are excited to see how this initiative shapes both their learning and ours!
